Adult Ortho Considerations

People of all ages are improving their smiles and their oral health with orthodontics. Today, many adults understand the importance of maintaining their health and choose to receive treatment. In some cases, misaligned teeth have been a concern for years. Other times, teeth shift later in life and cause problems. If you are concerned about any of the following, you may want to consult with an orthodontist for a professional opinion:

Crowding – The most common reason for seeking orthodontic treatment. Crowding results when teeth don’t have enough room in the jaw.

Spacing – Spacing may be caused by missing teeth or teeth that are spread out, creating gaps.

Overbite – The teeth of the upper jaw rest in front of the lower jaw, sometimes covering the lower teeth.

Cross bite – A bite that occurs when the upper and lower jaws are not aligned properly.

Tooth Wear – Teeth can be worn down due to misalignment that is untreated or grinding during sleep.

Periodontal Problems – Food can get trapped in misaligned teeth and it may be hard to brush or floss. Over time, bacteria can build up, causing periodontal disease.

Impacted, Tipped or Missing Teeth – Resolving these issues is part of all orthodontic treatment.

Under bite – A condition where the lower jaw extends out further than the upper jaw.

Dental Midlines not lined up – Usually corrected for aesthetic reasons but also involves correct tooth and jaw alignment.

Upper Teeth Protrusion – The front teeth protrude forward excessively, making it difficult to use them properly. Correction of this problem can also significantly improve tooth aesthetics.

Open bite – The upper and lower jaw are not aligned with each other. There is a large space between the upper and lower teeth causing significant chewing issues.

As an adult, these problems can create other issues that are irreversible or expensive to treat like wear and breakage of the teeth, bone loss leading to tooth loss, and tooth decay*. Not receiving orthodontic treatment when it’s needed can create long-term health issues that cost you more in the end.

In almost all cases, orthodontic treatment can alleviate or completely resolve the issue and can offer important benefits, including:

  • Preventing or improving periodontal problems
  • Preventing or reducing bone loss around teeth
  • Creating space for dentist to restore missing teeth
  • Improving facial appearance, self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Improving function of teeth and oral health
