Best Time for Orthodontics
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all kids get an orthodontic check-up by age 7. Most orthodontic treatment begins between the ages of 9 and 14, so what is the reason to check at age 7? By age 7, most children have a mix of adult and baby teeth. An orthodontist can identify problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth while some baby teeth are still present. This is important because some orthodontic problems are easier to correct if they are found early.
If a problem is found, treatment may not be recommended at this time. These patients may have periodic "recall" appointments (at no charge) to be checked as permanent teeth come in and the face and jaws continue to grow.
Some problems that can be detected in young patients would benefit from early “interceptive treatment”. Early treatment may prevent more serious problems from developing, and may make treatment at a later age less complicated. Typically, early treatment involves the use of orthodontic appliances, which may be removable, to guide the growth of young bones and create a better environment for adult teeth as they emerge.
For each patient who needs treatment, there is a unique and ideal time to begin treatment in order to achieve the best results. Orthodontists have the knowledge to determine when the time is right.
